The Difference Between Training and Behaviour Work

by thedogcalmer

It is one of the most common misunderstandings I see.

A dog is pulling on the lead, barking at other dogs, struggling to settle at home, or reacting in ways that feel overwhelming… And the first thought is often, “we need more training.” Sometimes that is true, but it is not the whole picture.

Because training and behaviour work are not the same thing, understanding that difference can change everything. If training alone is failing, it’s time to look deeper.

Training Teaches a Dog What To Do

Training is about skills to the owner and the dog, it is the teaching of clear, structured technique:

  • walking nicely on a lead

  • coming back when called

  • sitting, staying, waiting

  • responding to cues around distractions

It gives dogs and owners steps to follow to build communication, creating a shared language between dog and owner. Training is visible, progressive and measurable. Done well, it builds confidence in both dog and handler.

But training alone does not always reach the reason behind behaviour, sometimes that is irrelevant but sometimes vital knowledge for progress.

Behaviour Work Understands Why It’s Happening

Behaviour work looks beneath the surface.

It asks:

  • What is this dog feeling?

  • What is driving this reaction?

  • Where did this begin?

  • What is being reinforced, often without anyone realising?

  • What is the dog getting out of it?

  • Why does your dog think he is doing the what is wanted of him? (cos he does)

Behaviour is not disobedience, its miscommunication. Behaviour work is about recognising that… and changing it at its root.

Your dog is not “stubborn or “bad.” The unwanted behaviour is simply information.

Instead of asking “how do I stop this?”but instead “what is my dog trying to tell me?”
