New to water retrieves?
Start shallow. Toss just a couple of metres, celebrate the dogs return. If you are unsure your dog will bring it back attach some string so that you can reel it in and not get upset with your dog.

Recall practice: throw short, invite back, take the loop and reward calmly
Impulse control: Sit/Watch before each throw (for the more enthusiastic retrievers, remember the control takes some fun out, if your dog doesn't have much enthusiasm yet don't put this bit in and when ready not every day.
Confidence around water: build distance gradually as your dog relaxes
 
Pick your size
Medium: for smaller to mid-sized dogs and smaller mouths
Large: for medium–large breeds who prefer a bigger hold
Between sizes? Choose the larger for visibility and easier carrying.
Care & safety
Supervise play. This is a training toy, not a chew. Rinse after muddy or salty water, check the loop and ball regularly, and store out of reach between sessions.
